The RCFC Prompting Framework

Most people write prompts like they're texting a friend. The RCFC framework makes you think like a director giving a briefing to an expert: Role → Context → Format → Constraints.

R โ€” Role

Tell the AI who to be. "You are a senior wealth advisor with 20 years experience in fee-only financial planning." This sets tone, vocabulary, and perspective.

C โ€” Context

Give the situation. Who is the audience? What happened before this? What does the AI need to know to be genuinely helpful vs. generically correct?

F โ€” Format

Specify the output structure. "Write 3 versions: (A) 100 words direct, (B) 150 words story-led, (C) bullet points only." Format clarity = output quality.

C โ€” Constraints

What should the AI avoid or include? "No jargon. Flag any compliance risks. Don't make specific return promises. Tone: warm but professional."
